THE NEW WORLD SPEED CAR
IN VENTOR ADMITSADEFEAT. (Received Jan. 24, 10.50 p.m.) LONDON, Jan. 24. “I will never build another car. I know when I am beaten,” declared Malcolm Campbell after the fifth unsuccessful attempt to smash the world’s speed record. The sum _ot £IO,OOO was expended ,011 a 450-horse-power Blue Bird, in which the hopes and aspirations of several manufacturers were centred. It is at present aboard a lorry going to London for overhaul. This expensive three tons of machinery has thus far only covered a hundred miles under its own power. Its failure to achieve 171 159 miles an hour, at present to the credit of Parry Thomas, marked the destruction of dreams -which have urged Campbell to constant application for three years past —A.N.Z.C.A.
