P.B. RAM FAIR
RAMS AVERAGE SJ TO 6GNS. W: RAYNER TOPS FAIR. With a catalogue of approximately 2100 Romneys, 550 Lincolns and ISO Southdowns the Poverty Bay Stockbrokers’ annual Ram Fair opened at Matawhero yesterday. There, was an attendance of about 300, many .of whom were only spectators, and bidding in the early part was dull though it livened up for a time at the beginning of the afternoon. Rbmneys were submitted yesterday and occupied the whole of the day. Compared with other years the quality was good, though as usual toe two extremes were in evidence —while there were a few .pens of particularly fine rams, there were many containing sheep -which would not he a credit to any flock. Speaking generally, however, it appeared as if the average standard of the sheep offered was in advance of last year’s Falir.
As usual, bidding for high quality pens was spirited but competition was lacking for the lower grade lines and quite a number of pens were passed in. The sale fell away badly in the afternoon and particularly in the last two hours, when there was practically no demand. It was plainly evident that purchasers had acquired all the sheep they required and that the number offering was far too great to be absorbed at present. Mbch of the stock offered at this stage, of course, was of very poor quality, but there were many" good rams which could have been" purchased for almost any figure. Mr. TV. Raynor (Masterton) topped the market with 12 1-shear Romneys, which realised 13i guineas. Undoubtedly the sheep were a particularly fine line, however, showing no outstanding faults. Values averaged) between 5£ to C guineas and sheep at that price were not of the best quality though as previously stated an improvement on the average standard of last year. Prices for individual lots were:—
