CRICKET.

U.C.C.C V. c.c.c. This match was commenced on Saturday last, play beginning at about 10,30 a.m. Messrs Olliver and Sweet, the respective captains, tossed for choice of innings, which the latter won, and sent his opponents to the wickets. Ollivier and Wood were the first to act on the defensive, Sweet and Chalmers doing the bowling. The former soon dismissed Wood with a splendid ball; one for 2. Neilson was well caught by Chalmers at short slip; two for 5. Ollivier soon afterwards ran himself out—three for 11—and Chalmers, when the total had reached 16, bowled Stevens. Lee was bowled by a half volley from Sweet; five for 19. This looked very bad; but a stand was now made by Baker and Wilson, the former doing most of the run getting. A good catch made at mid-off: by Watson disposed of Wilson; six for 36. Souter came next, and with Baker made another short stand ; but Chalmers, who was bowling well on and rather bumpy, managed to get one past Baker’s bat —seven for 51 —of which Baker had made 25 by a 3, five 2’s, and singles. No other stand was made, the eighth and ninth wickets falling for 55, and the tenth for 56, Souter being not out for 9, including a 8 and a 2. With this small score against them the C.C.C. commenced their first innings, but with no better luck than their opponents, for with the exception of J. Fowler no double figure was made, J. Fowler batted remarkably well for his 22, and carried out his bat; his principal hits were two 3’s and four 2’s. Monck made a good hit to leg off Fuller, for which he obtained 3, and Sweetjmade two 2’s before Lee, who was well on, dismissed him. Watson, although having a peculiar style, did good service for his side. The wickets fell as follows;—one for 0, two and three for 4, four for 6, five for 26, six for 33, seven for 34, eight for 40, nine and ten for 43. With 13 runs to the good the U.C.C.C. began their second innings, Ollivier and Wood again being their first representatives, Ollivier was first to retire, being clean bowled by Chalmers, one for 16; but Neilson and Wood made a good stand, and the second wicket did not fall until 36 appeared on the telegraph, Wood’s 21 was made up principally of singles, there being only five 2’s. Stevens and Neilson then made a long stand, doing what they liked with the bowling, which now got very loose ; and the fielding, which had hitherto been good, became very bad with one or two exceptions. The telegraph showed good progress with the score, the figures being frequently changed. Several bowlers were tried, J. Fowler and Beard being tried at the lower end, and E. Fowler and G. Turner at the upper end, but without avail. Sweet then relieved Beard at the lower end, and with his first ball secured Stevens’ wicket—three for 84, of which Stevens made 30, by four 3’s, three 2’s, and singles. He should, however, have been caught three times. Baker and Neilson raised the score to 100, when the latter was unfortunately run out. Lee retired at 105, and Baker, who had played very steadily, but not made many runs, was caught by Watson at short-leg. Wilson and Fuller brought the score up to 131 before the former was bowled by Turner ; he made 11, by a 4, a 3, and two 2’s. Dickinson made 7, by a 3, a 2, and two singles, and the innings closed for 145, Fuller carrying out his bat for 10, including four 2’s. The fielding during this innings was very bad. Several catches were missed, and the ball was seldom stopped and returned properly. J. Fowler at long leg and cover point fielded well, and so also did Sweet, who unfortunately hurt his knee, which militated against his bowling. In the first innings Alpe longstopped well, there being no byes, but in the second he allowed several to pass. The C.C.C. then entered upon their second innings, but with no better luck than their first, as they lost four wickets for 15 runs when time was called. Monck was the only one who made any stand, but he was let off by Ollivier on two occasions—on the first he should have been stumped, and the next, an easy catch, was missed. The fielding of the U.C.C.C. was good, and the bowling of Lee was very destructive, as will be seen on reference to the analysis. The match will be played out at some future date.
