SPORTS AT WOODEND.

On Boxing Day a number of sports arranged for by Mr M. B. Thorapkins, Woodend Hotel, took place in a field near the hotel. The prize list was a liberal one, yet the attendance was not a large one, probably accounted for by other attraction s and the fact that the Woodend sports committee's sports are to be held to-day. Four competitors. Vaulting with Pole—lst, £1 10s, E. McGowan, clearing Bft 3in ; 2nd, 15s, M. Collin. Three competitors. Hurdle race, 440 Yards, eight flights—lst. £1 10s, E. Moody ; 2nd, 10s, Gotf. Three competitors. Boys (under 16), Half-mile race—lst, inlaid walnut writing desk, value £1 15s, Rowe ; 2nd, pair tweed trousers, C. Eldridge. Three competitors. Boys’ (under 14) 440 Yards race—lst, cup value 255, G. Barford ; 2nd, pair trousers. L. Cox. Five competitors. Maori Men’s race, 440 Yards—lst, a bridle, Feetow ; 2nd, felt hat, Jim Te Aik. Handicap race for Married Men over 40 years, a yard for each year above that age allowed —Ist, W. Judson ; 2nd, J. Murfit. Girls’ race (under 12 years)—lst, Jane Howell ; 2nd, E. Stevens. There were several other races for juveniles.
