BOROUGH COUNCIL.
LYTTELTON. The usual weekly meeting was held on Monday. Present—His Worship the Mayor, and Crs Chalmers, Hawkins, Buist, Graham, Young, Kenner, and Orange. The minutes of the last meeting been read, before they were confirmed Cr Graham stated that there was a slight error, the drain he alluded to on a former occasion was in London street, not in Dublin street. The following correspondence was then read : To <he Bank of New Zealand informing them that Cr Uouse had been elected Mayor. To the Secretary for Public Works, asking when tie culvert in Salt'o Gully would be commenced. To the Colonial Secretary informing him of the election of the present Mayor. To the town clerk, Auckland, expressing willingness to co-operate for the introduction of the Gas Act, and agreeing to pay proportion of expenses. To Captain Kiddy asking him to reconsider his resignation of the office of fire inspector. To Mr W. Holmes pressing him to make channel from the private property to the main road. From Captain Kiddy, stating that he must resign his office of fire inspector. Cr Hawkins, in moving that Captain Kiddy's resignation be accepted, spoke highly of that gentleman, and thought the Council should pass a vote of thanks to him for the services he had rendered. Cr Young begged to second the resolution, which was carried unanimously, several councillors speaking highly of Captain Kiddv's exertion. From Mr White, Tokomairiro, respecting salt gl zed pities. From Mr F. 11. Fielding, enclosing prospect.is of New Zealand directory, and asking for information, and support in the undertaking. Cr Hawk ns begged to move "Tbatths clerk be instructed to forward information in the matter to Mr Fielding, and that a copy of the book, be ordered."
Cr Graham, in seconding fie resolutior, was of opinion that the work would ba very useful to refer to The motion was carried. From Mr WiHcox. in reference to block plan of sewers in the borough, ULdertaking to make such plan with the afsist.ance of the officers of the Council, for the sum of £2O. After discussion, Cr Buist moved, and Cr Graham seconded—" That the matter be adjourned for a week." From the Bank of New Zealand, re the appointment of Cr Bouse as Mayor. His Worship stated that he had seen the police on the matter of cattle trespaesinp, and that the police had asked to be supplied with a map of the reserves. After general remarks, Cr Chalmers moved, and Cr Hawkins seconded—" That the police be furnished with a map of the reserves." Carried. The clerk stated that he had collected £6 12s Cd during the week. The weekly pay-sheet, amounting to £l7 7s lid, was then passed for payment. Cr Keuner stated that one part of the footpath in Dublin street wag iu a very dangerous state. Cr Buist was not aware of the matter, and did not know exactly where it was. Cr Keuiiersaid that the hole he complained of was both large and dangerous. Cr Buist said, on behalf of the works committee, that the matter should be attended to. Cr Graham said that they all knew that it was the custom for the Council to let the Times and Press be the official paper on alternate years. The Tress had been the official paper for the past twelve months, and, according to precedent, the Times should now occupy that position. But such scurrilous remarks had appeared in a paper connected with the Times, that he should beg to move—" That the Press be again the official paper. Cr Young seconded the motion. Cr Kenner begged to move as an amendment—" That the Times be the official paper for the year," and spoke highly both of that paper and the Star. Crs Chalmers, Hawkins, and his Worship all supported the resolution. His Worship said that a great deal of scurrilous matter had been published, and that the Council had been held up to ridicule once a week. Private family matters had also been entered into; and he thought they should take these means of showing their strong disapprobation. The oiiginal motion—" That the Fzess be the official paper for the ensuing year"—was then put and carried, Cr Kenner being the only dissentient.
