PREBBLETON SPORTS.

Committee James Maskrey, James Donald, J. W. Anderson, T. Allsop, B. Prebble. Judges—Dr Durham and W. C. Maxwell. Starters—R. M. Bovey and Joseph Haydon. Clerks of the Course, C. J. W. Cookson, and W. A. Murray. Hon secretary— W. H. Comerford. Hon treasurer—J. W. Anderson. These annual sports came off on Monday last in a paddock of Mr Edward Prebble's close behind Mr James Blyth's blacksmith's bhop. There were about 400 people on the ground. Mr Anderson, of the Prebbleton Hotel had a booth. A detachment of police nnder Inspector Buckley were on the ground to keep order if necessary. The committee are to be congratulated on the manner in which they worked to pull through the programme. The committee allowed £5 to Messrs Jas Maskrey, W. Hazelhurst, and T. Allsop, to distribute amongst the children. The big race of the day was that thrown open to all comers, distance, one and a-half miles, which brought four Christchurch men to the scratch. Wm. McFarlane, who has figured before at these sports, was the favorite at start, with Brown second. The events did in every instance bring a large field to the start ; for the tilting at the ring there were nineteen came to start. The hon secretary, Mr W. H. Comerford, was indefatigable in discharging his arduous duties. The programme was gone through as under : Boys under fourteen years ; distance, 410 yards. Ist prize, 10s ; 2ad, ss; 3rd, 2s 6d. J.Jeffs 1 E. Prebble 2 John McMeckan 3 GirlS' race, under fourteen {years ; distance, 220 yards. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, 5s ; 3id, 2s 6d. M. Cook 1 E. Thompson 2 8. A. Harwood 3 Six others started. Boys under 16 ; distance, half mile. Ist prize, 20s ; 2no} 10s ; third, ss. J.Jeffs 1 Marshall 2 E. Prebble 3 Grey and M. Cookaon also ran. The boys all kept well together until within 200 yards from home, when P. Marshall spurted away, pursued by Jeffs, but when within 30 yards from home Jeffs collared Marshall and won by two yards. Wheelbarrow race, blindfolded ; open to all. Ist prize, 20s ; 2nd, 10s ; 3rd, ss. M. Donohue 1 W. M'Farlane 2 J. Prebble 3 C. Brown and M. Gibbon also competed. Donohue was the only man that got within the flags at the fir3t start, and thus the others had to go over again with the result above. Men's Flat race; distance, 440 yards. Ist prize, 20s ; 2nd, 10s ; 3rd, ss. Jas. Wills 1 W. Bailey 2 Dunbar 3 Streeter, Doherty, A. Harwood, N. M'Clinton, Smith, J. M'llroy, W. Murray, and E. Townshend also started. After two false starts, in which many ran nearly the whole way round the course, the lot got away to a very fair start. Wills went away with the lead, which he maintained throughout, hotly pursued by Bailey, the rest in a heap close behind. Wills went oast the judges' post five yards ahead of Bailey, the rest all on Bailey's heels. This was a capital race, and hotly contested throughout. Married Women's race; distance, 150 yards. Ist prize, a cradle; 2nd, a clothes-basket; 3rd, teapot aud cosy. MrsE.Olark 1 Mrs W. Calder f Mrs Rickerly T E. Pritchards, G. Thompson, J. Smith, A, Harwood also ran. All the Indies ran well. Mrs Calder and Mrs Bickeily coming in a dead heat for second place, it was ultimately decided by tossing, Mrs Calder getting the clothes-basket aud Mrs Kickerly the teapot and cosy. Hurdle race for men; distance, half-mile; six flights at hurdles; height, 3ft 6in. Ist G. Maddison 1 James Dunlar 2 John Dalian M i m« ••• 3

J. Dohcrty ran also. Doherty lei until the beginning of the second lap, when Maddison spurted away, and was over the last hurdle fifty yards ahead of Dunbar, who was second. Dunbar, when he was over the last hurdle, spurted, but failed to catch Maddison, running in thirty yards ahead, Dalton a good third Doherty nowhere. Sack race for men; 250 yards. Ist prize, 15s; 2nd, 5s ; 3rd, 2s 6d. James Dunbar 1 James Prebble 2 J. L. Blair 3

John Wills, J. Bartleson, W. Kildrey also ran. Dunbar took the lead, winning easily. The rest after many falls managed to get the above place. Men's B'lat race, open to all comers ; distance one mile and a half. Ist prize, £5 ; 2nd, £2 ; 3rd, ss. Wm. McFarlane 1 C. Brown 2 M. Donohue 3 J. B. Buchanon also ran. This was a splendid race. C. Brown took the lead, and kept it until the beginning |of the last' lap, when McFarlane spurted up, and after a smart tussle succeeded in passing Brown. Going round for the fifth lap Buchanon cried a go, Donohue gradually falling behind. Coming up the strait for home Brown tried all he knew to pass McFarlane, but failed, McFarlane winning by a yard and a half. Egg and Spoon race ; distance, 150 yards. Ist prize, 10a ; 2nd, 5s ; 3rd, 2s 6d. R. Brake 1 J. Bailey 2 J. Main 3 Prebble, Maddison, McMckan, E. Townsend, C. W. Cookson, H. Knight, H. Tosswill also tried to carry the egg, but only four managed to bring their eggs sound to the winning post. Running High Jump. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss. W. A. Murray (4ft 10in) ... 1 Jas. Dunbar (4ft BiiO 2 Jno. Wills, Jas. Wills, and Jno. Dalton also competed. Jno. Dalton failed to clear the bar at start, 4ft; Jno. Wills went out at 4ft 4in; Jas. Wills at 4ft 7in; Dunbar, 4ft Bin. Standing High Jump. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss. W. A. Murray (3ft Din) 1 Jas. Dunbar (3ft Sin") f Jas. Wills (3ft Bin) f Jno. Dalton and J. F. Blair also jumped. Murray, who was much superior to his opponents, won easily, Dunbar and Jas Wills dividing the stakes for second and third places. Married Men's handicap; distance 440 yards; over 40 years of age. Ist prize, 20s; 2nd, 10s; 3rd, ss. G. Lane 1 P. Healey also ran. Harding and Keeley coming in a dead heat for second place divided the stakes. Healey took the lead, but fell about 100 yards from home, thus spoiling his chance; the rest in all in a heap. Married Women's handicap, distance, 150 yards, over 30 years of age. Ist prize, 10s ; 2nd, 5s ; 3rd, 2s 6d. Mrs E. Clark 1 Mrs Rickerley 2 Mrs Calder * 3 Two others also ran ; but Mrs Clark was far too good for the others. Men's Three-legged race; distance, 440 yards. Main f These three men all tied, and divided the stakes. Sixteen others competed. Vaulting with Pole. Ist prize, 20s. Jas. Dunbar 1 Two others competed. Throwing the Hammer, Kjlbs weight. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss. G. Thcmpson 1 J. Hodgens 2 Four others competed. An Handicap Race. Distance, one mile; open to all comers. Ist prize, £2; 2ad, £1; 3rd, 2s 6d. M. Donohue 1 C. Brown 2 W. McFarlane 3 C. Brown and W. McFarlane started at scratch; Donohue receiving 50 yards start; Doherty and Townsend 150 yards start.
