Melbourne. —The " Argus" of the 19th instant reports :—ln the import market business continues to maintain a very quiet tone, and we scarcely now look for much being done before the turn of the year. Flour is very firm, and sales are making at £l2 10s in parcels. Tnc demand for bakers' lots is exceedingly light at £l2 15s, bags returned. "Wheat is steady at 5s 9d to 5s 9id, but outside the auctioneers there is very little, if anything at all offering. By private telegram, we learn that the Cyphrenes brings to Sydney 400 tons of breadstuff's in all; we likewise are informed that of the shipment ot oats, said to be on board for this port, more than half the quantity was sold for transhipment to Adelaide; we reported the sale some time ago. A large business has again been done in candles. Yesterday a telegram was received to the effect that the month's shipments for Melbourne amounted to only 77 cwt ; buyers went in again, and purchased at an advance on previous rates 7500 boxes; all, in fact, that could be got. hold of was cleared oil'the market, and as now 52,000 boxes or thereabouts are concentrated in one interest, it is fully anticipated that the price demanded, lid per lb, will be obtained, more especially as this ligure has been required for some days for the small quantity held outside ot now operating. Trade sales of quicksilver are making atSs, and this price has become more established. Hops are in fair request. We learn of the quittance ol 50 bales Tasmanian 1874, in parcels at Is sd, Is Od, and Is 7d, according to quantity, inquiries for fine white Mauritius sugar have been experienced, and oilers are freely made, without as yet, however, leading to business. In liquids the only new feature wortu special notice is the receipt of private telegrams advising the month's shipments from London to this port to be only iio,ooo gallons, making now four months of very low shipments. Rum, 10 per cent, •0.p., is selling at 3s 9d.
