LINCOLN SPORTS.

Stewards —Wm. Qeddes, E. Townshend, \V, A. Murray, Peter Tod, J. L. Blair, C. McPherson, George Samson, James Wills, and John Dalton. Starters —J. L, Blair and D. Dunn. Judges Rev H, Stocker, A, P. O’Oallaghan and Mr John Wills. Honorary Secretary—B. Townshend. Honorary Treasurer—W. A. Murray. The annual Lincoln sports took place on New Year’s Day in the towrship. The events were confined to residents in the Lincoln, Springs, Templeton, Courtenay, East or West Malvern, Port Victoria, and Little River Road Districts. The weather, which was all that could be desired for outdoor sports in the early part of the day, about two o’clock began to look very threatening for rain, which began to fall before the programme bad been gone through. There were about 200 people present, and there is no doubt had the weather looked more promising, there would have been a much larger concourse of people. Mrs Livitt had a refreshment booth on the ground, but before the sports were ended got drowned out and had to remove. The rain coming on was the cause of Mr Sluis, of the Perthshire Arms, doing a thriving business, the hotel being crammed to excess, people crowding to get out of the wet. A mounted constable was present, but on no occasion was his services required. The stewards and all the officers did their work well, all being on the ground at an early hour. A circular course for the athletic events had been prepared, being mowed, and marked off with flags, and was in very fair running order. The following is the programme, which was began at 12 o’clock : Boys’ race, under 12, 100 yards ; Ist prize, 2s 6d ; 2nd, Is ; entrance, 6d. W O’Neil I R, Prebble 2 A. Knight and John Mcllroy also ran. Boys’ race, under 16, 100 yards ; Ist prize, 10s ;2nd, ss; entrance, Is. H. Tosswill 1 H. Townshend 2 W. O’Neil, Healy, M. Bennet, and A. Rennet also started. This was a good race between the first and second, Tosswill win-

ning by two feet ; four yards between second and third. Hop, Step and Jump ; Ist prize, 10s ; 2nd, ss; entrance, la. James Prebble ... ... ... 1 John Dalton ... ... 2 James Wills. J. Mc.VI kau, and E. Townsbend also completed. This was a well contested race, all landing very close together ; Prebble, who is quite a youth, winning by three inches. 100 Yaids race, for men—lst prize, 15s; 2nd, 6s Entrance, Is. W. Mansou ... ... ... 1 W. Bailey 2 John Wills, H. Murray, George Maddison, James Prebble, S. McLeigh, James Wills, E. Townshend, W. A, Murray, and John Dalton, also competed. Owing to so many entering, this race had to be run in heats. For the first heat six started, Manson coming in first, and Bailey second. The second heat W. A. Murray was first, and John Dalton second. For the final heat the two firsts and seconds started, Manson winning easily by three yards. Bailey second, with Murray third; two yards between second and third. Half-mile Hurdle race—lst prize, 3os; 2nd, 15s. Entrance, 2s. G. Maddison 1 W. Manson 2 H. Murray, Jas Wills and John Wills also ran. James and John Wills retired early in the race. H. Murray cut out the running and was eleven yards ahead going over the fourth hurdle, when Manson and Maddison spurted, going over the fifth hurdle together. Before coming to the last hurdle, Murray cried a go, Maddison jumping two yards ahead of Manson at the last hurdle, and putting on a tremendous spurt landed himself a winner by five yards. Boys’ under twelve, 220. First prize, 7s fid; 2nd, 3s, Entrance fid. R. Prebble 1 W. O’Neil 2 A. Knight and W. J. Hampton also ran. Prebble won easily. Running long jump. First prize, 10s ; 2nd, ss. Entrance, Is. W. A. Murray, loft 4in... ... 1 J. Dawe, 14ft lOin 2 J. Dalton, James Wills, John Wills, and James Prebble jumped also. Mens’ 220 yards race. First prize, 20s; 2nd, 10s ; 3rd, Is fid. W. Manson ... 1 James Wills 2 Maddison 3 Bailey also ran and came in second, but was disqualified for going outside the flags. He entered a protest against James Wills for jostling, he having taken his ground, but on consideration by the stewards it was resolved that the protest be disallowed, Wills being in front of Bailey by three yar 1s before Bailey spurted. Girls’ race, under 16; 150 yards, Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss; entrance free. Annie Everest 1 Mary Mahuke 2 Annie Henley, Jane Duncan, Sarah Kcast, and Eliza Mahuke also ran. The winner was a much older and stronger girl than any of the others, and won easily. Married Women’s race; 100 yards. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, three necklaces. Mrs Harry Stace 1 Mrs Sandy McKenzie 2 Mrs Neil and Mrs Healey also ran. Mrs Stace won easily. Boys’ race, under 10; 80 yards; Ist prize, 2s fid; 2nd, Is. W. Butter 1 W. Everest 2 Eleven others ran, 440 Yards’ race. Ist prize, 30s; 2nd, 15s. W. Manson ... ... ... 1 G. Maddison 2 Bailey and H. Murray also started. All got away to a good start, Bailey rushing to the front until half-way round, when he cried a go, having hurt his leg. Manson then went to front, which he maintained to the finish, winning easily; fifteen yards between first and second, Murray a bad third. Running High Jump. Ist prize, 15s ; 2nd, 7s fid. M. A. Murray (4ft Sin) 1 W. Baker (4ft 7in) 2 James Wills also competed, but retired at 4ft fiin. Standing High Jump, Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss. James Wills (3ft 9in) 1 W, A. Murray (3ft Sin) 0 John Dalton (3ft Sin) 0 Pat Ryan also jumped, but was out at 3ft 7in. Dalton and Murray having tied, divided. Running High Jump, for boys under 16. Ist prize, 10s; 2nd, ss. H. Tosswill (3ft 7in) 1 A. Knight (3ft 4in) 2 H. Simpson also jumped, but was out at 3ft Sin. It had by this time begun to settle down to a steady rain. The next event was the trotting match, which brought five horses to the post. Trotting Match, distance about two miles on the road from Taylor’s to the hotel. Ist prize, £3 ; 2nd, 30s ; entrance, ss. F. 0. Murray’s Billy 1 John Sharp’s Chestnut 2 John Small and J. L. Blair, and W. Manson also entered horses. Blair’s and Manson’s horses were out of the race from the start, being unable to settle their horses down to a trot. Small trotted his horse from start to finish, but was never in the race, being far too slow. Hack race, distance three-quarters of a mile ; Ist prize, £2; 2nd, 20s; entrance, ss. W. Scott’s Paddylaml 1 Peter Tod’s Tim Whifiier ... 2 J. L. Blair, W. Manson, and James Wills also entered horses. All got away to a splendid start. Tim Whifiier immediately jumped to the front, which he maintained until about three parts of the distance had been covered, when Riddyland let out, and came away winning by six lengths hard held, Tim Whifiier second, the rest a long way astern. Boys’ race under 16, 440 yards. Ist prize, 15s; 2nd, ss. H. Tosswill 1 H. Townsend 2 A. Knight also ran. This was a runaway race, Tosswill winning as he liked. Knight gave up before half the distance had been covered. Mile race, for men. Ist prize, 40s; 2nd, 20s; 3rd, ss. G. Maddison 1 Pat, Ryan 2 W. Bailey...- 3 Despite the pelting rain, seven essayed for this race, which resulted in Maddison winning by 40 yards. A meeting of the committee was then held, when it was decided to postpone the rest of the events, it|being impossible to carry them on,
