ROAD BOARDS.

HEATHCOTE.

The Board met on Thursday evening, 28th January. Present all the members. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed.

The clerk reported having received— Ordinary rates, £l9 7s Id ; Waimakariri, £1 6s 9d ; from Waimakariri conservators, for collecting, £ls 6s; from Sir Cracroft Wilson, subscription towards bridge over Fitting’s cutting on the Hills road, £lO, Total, £45 19s lOd. Mr Hawkie waited on the Board re obstructions on Bamford’s road, stating be was willing, with others, to clear their gorse, ancj subscribe towards the formation of the road, provided it was thrown open, but that at present Mr Rainey had not removed the obstruction. Also, re drainage of St John’s road, asking to have the side channels opened the full width of the road. The half cost of same, he thought, would be paid by parties interested. It was resolved that the foreman be instructed to again remove the fence placed by Mr Rainey across Bamford’s road, and that he be sued for all expenses and damages under clause 74 of the Roads Ordinance.

The consideration of drainage of St John’s road was postponed till next meeting. Messrs Parkes, Perry, and Stace waited on the Board, Mr Parkes asking for the road leading to his place to be formed, and Mr Perry re the drainage of bis property, both were informed the matters were under consideration. Mr Stace’s offer of gravel was declined for the present. It was resolved that the foreman be instructed to proceed with the formation of a footpath from the quay to Opawa, and to handrail the bridge. That the chairman see the Government re survey of river roads, as it is of importance the matter should be decided as soon as possible. That the foreman proceed with the formation of the Avon river road, from Mr Cowlishaw’s road to Mr Hitchen’s corner. That the chairman and foreman report on Colombo Bridge at next meeting. The following correspondence was read : From Mr Sycamore, asking for £BO on account.

Resolved—“ That Messrs Atwood, Mardon, Ness, and the foreman inspect the work specified to be done by Mr Sycamore, and report on same.” From Messrs Austin and Kirk, asking the Board to metal that part of the Hills road leading to their place, which the Board had just formed. To be informed the Board are not in a position to do more at present. From Mr Jacobson, for permission to use a portion of the river bank, near Captain Charles worth’s, for the purpose of building a small vessel. Granted, subject to the usual conditions. From Mr A. Duncan re Jackson’s creek, drawing the Board’s attention to clauses 65 and 66 of the Ordinance. To be acknowledged, and informed that the Board does not think it is advisable to take any steps in the matter, as it considers Mr Duncan stands in a better position than the Board to take action against the parties offending, and in reference to the footpath the Board will furnish Mr'Duncan with particulars. From the Secretary for Public Works, requesting the Board to furnish a list of footpaths in the district, as it is desirable to publish same in Gazette. The same to be attended to.

From the Secretary for Public Works re repairs to the swing bridge. Also, letter from the Commissioner of Police re the trespass of cattle, recommending the appointment of a stock driver to assist the police. Tenders for filling up the Ferry road drain were opened, aud one conditionally accepted. Accounts to the amount of £361 18s 4d W«r« passed, when the Board adjourned.
