ROAD BOARDS.

* HEATHCOTB. This Board met on March 12th. Present —Messrs Ness (chairman pro tem ), Mardon, and Attwood. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. The clerk had collected rates amounting to £lO 11s 9d. Mr Rudd waited on the Board to purchase trees on the Avon river road, which the Board agreed to sell him. Mr Sycamore attended the office respecting his contract for shingling the Canal reserve road, when it was resolved that the clerk should write informing him that as the shingle was not according to contract the Board would accept the same only as unscreened shingle, and pay him for it at the rate of 3s 3d per yard, on condition the contract was fulfilled in every other respect and completed by the next Board day. The following correspondence was read:— From Mr Graham, offering to keep the road from his place to the top of the hill in repair for twelve months for the sum of £3O. Deferred till next meeting. From Mr Rosser, informing the Board he had to remove three loads of clay from Aldwin’s road, which he would replace. Also asking for payment on account of contract. Agreed to, and that he be reminded to complete his contract within the time. From Mr W. Ward, asking for remission of rates on account of sickness. Granted, From Mr S. Early, stating he had only one house in the district, which the tenant paid rates for. Referred to the clerk. A petition was received from six ratepayers, complaining of the bad state of Aldwin’s road, and also of clay being taken away. It was resolved that the road be attended to as soon as possible, and that in reference to the clay, the Board were obliged for the information, and that Mr Rosser would be instructed to replace the same immediately. From the Registrar-General, asking for statistics of the Board for the year 1874. The clerk was instructed to furnish the same. From the Secretary for Public Works, with requisition papers to apply for a General Government grant of £2lB allotted to the Board. From the Secretary of Public Works, approving of the acceptance of Mr Thomas Leatham’s tender for improvements on the Sumner road, and that as soon as the contract was signed a portion of the grant would be placed to the Board’s credit. The clerk was directed to write, informing the Government the contract must be carried out under their supervision, as the Board had no surveyor. The clerk was directed to give notice to each member, that special business would be transacted at the next meeting of the Board, to ensure a full meeting. The foreman was directed to procure the material, and make a pile driver for the use of the Board. Accounts to the amount of £258 7s 6d were passed, when the Board adjourned.
