GREYMOUTH ANNUAL RACES.

{Grey River Argus.") Second Day, March 18. Another race-meeting has passed off sue* cessfully, and we are glad to say that the proceedings on the second day were quite as successful as those recorded yesterday. The weather was everything that could be desired, the course was in splendid condition, and the.attendance was as large ail on the previous day. The only thing to be regretted was that, for most of the events on the card, the fields were so small as to take away much of the interest in the races, in fact they were, with two exceptions, reduced to a match, and in one the winner waß declared before the races. Notwithstanding all drawbacks, the number of people on the course appeared thoroughly to enjoy their holiday, and we are glad to say that, whether by foot or by coach, they all returned to town in the evening without the occurrence of any serious accident. The day's sport commenced with the Gold Fields Handicap, of 125 sovs, second horse to receive 20 sovs from the stake ; distance, If miles. For this event there were three entries, but Tamburini was scratched at the last moment, the reason being that he had broken down the previous day, and was not then in condition. The result was a match between Guy Fawkes and Septimus, the first carrying 7st 21b, and the second 7st, both feather weights ; but the two youngsters who rode them deserve credit for their jockeyship. It was a hard race all the way; The first time past the stand the colt attempted to bolt, but the lad was able to check him by an effort. Next time past they were close together, and Septimus made an effort, but it was not sufficient, and Guy Fawkes had the race as he liked by lengths, hard held. Both horses were very well ridden. Mr J. Emmerson's br c Guy Fawkes, 3 yrs, 7st 21b (Cheeseman) 1 Mr D. Cameron's gr g Septimus, aged, 7tt (Smith) 2 The second event of the day was the Hurdle Handicap of 50 sovs, about 2 miles. There were only two entries —Tommy Dodd and Magenta, and before the race the betting was very much in favor of the former. The result proved that this faith in Tommy Dodd was correct, as he took his hurdles in splendid style, while his opponent baulked several times until the race was hopelessly lost. Tommy Dodd's last jump near the Grand Stand was the best of all. Mr D. O'Brien's b g Tommy Dodd, aged, 10st71b 1 Mr Stevenson's ch g Magenta, aged, 9st6lb 2 The third event was the Borough Handicap of 50 sovs, distance 2 miles. There were three acceptances—Yatterina, Guy Fawkes, and Septimus, and a hot race was anticipated, butGuywas scratched, leaving it a match between the other two—Yatterina carrying Bst 61b, and Septimus 6st 2lb. Yatterina led all the way, and won easily, hard held. Handicap Hack Race of 15 sovs, 1| miles. For this event were three entries—Mr Carroll's Unknown, Mrßurnhill's Stormbird, and Mr Evans's Scotty. Unknown was carrying 10st 71b, Stormbird Bst 71b, and Scotty Bst, but the latter started with 81b over his weight. There was a good start and a pretty hot pace, Scotty leading and keeping the lead. For the last round, Unknown and Scotty ran head and head, but ultimately Scotty drew ahead and won easily, Stormbird a bad third.

For the Stewards' Handicap, of 30 sovs, 1£ miles, there were five acceptances, but only three came to the post—Yatterina, Sandy, and Guy Fawkes; Septimus and Magenta being scratched. This was a splendid race all through—we might almost call it one of the redeeming features of the day. The pace was very hot, and Yat and Guy raced head and head for a longdistance, and it was not until the judge's post had been passed that the winner was known, Guy Fawkes winning by a head, Yatterina second, and Sandy not a good third. For the last event of the meeting—the Consolation Handicap, of 20 sovs, I mile, open to all beaten horses, only two were entered —Septimus and Magenta. A. capital race ensued, which was won by Magenta by a head.
