By the death of Lady Chantrey, the widow of Sir Francis Chantrey, the sculptor, the reversion of the sum of £IOO,OOO in round figures comes to the Council of the Royal Academy. Of this sum, according to the will of Sir Francis, the annual interest is to be applied to the purchase of works of painting or sculpture executed by artists in this country, minus a charge of £3OO per annum to the president for the time being and £SO to the secretary of the Royal Academy, "for their own absolute use and benefit." This will in all probability leave a sum of little less than £3OOO annually for expenditure in works of art, which r. ill enable the nation by degrees to become the possessor oT the principal works of painters ond sculptors of the British school.
