The Globe. TUESDAY, APRIL 27, 1875.
Some months ago, we called attention to the dangers arising to pedestrians in Christchureh through careless and incompetent drivers being entrusted with the charge of vehicles in the town. The subject has now attracted the attention of the City Council, and some members of that body are prepared to take action in the matter. It is high time that a very stringent byelaw was passed on the subject. The instances of reckless driving are plain to every one whose business avocations lead him through the streets of the town. It would be no great hardship to compel drivers of all vehicles to proceed at a certain pace, at such spots as the corner by the Bank of New Zealand. The bye-law must be made, sooner or later, and we contend that it should be done at once. There are many drivers about the town who require a sharp check in their present system of driving, and these men will understand the infliction of a fine better than any other mode of punishment. The demand on their pockets will come home to them with greater force than anything else, and will induce greater care on their part. It ought not to be forgotten that pedestrians have the same right to the roadway as the drivers of the vehicles, though the latter seem to imagine that everybody must clear out of their road at once. If the City Council will only pass such a bye-law, those who now drive recklessly through the streets will be checked in their dangerous practice, and the safety and comfort of pedestrians will be promoted.
