ROAD BOARDS.
COURTENAY. The Board met at the office, White’s Accommodation House, on May 4th. Present: The Chairman, Messrs Cardale, Gough, and Mathias. The minutes of the last meeting having been read and confirmed, tenders for the Highfield and Bach roads and the well at Greendale pound were opened, and one in each case accepted. The chairman informed the meeting that, owing to McDowell being so dilatory in commencing the West Coast road contract, he had directed the surveyor to offer it to the next local men. Anderton and Lord had accepted it, and were now at work. The Board approved of the chairman’s decision, and after some discussion it was decided that the surveyor should obtain legal advice as to the best means of drawing up specifications by which the Board could recover damages against any contractor who failed to commence or finish his contract in the specified time. The following letters were then read—From the Secretary for Public Works, stating that the letters about the crossings on the White Cliffs line had been forwarded to the railway engineer. Also from the chairman, Rakaia Road Board, regretting the Board’s inability to continue a road across the Selwyn, as the lands are all private property. Also from the Secretary for Public Works, stating that if the Board made cuttings from the Miner’s Arms to Tressilian station, the road would be surveyed as soon as possible. The surveyor was directed to prepare estimates by the next meeting of the expense of making cuttings from Miner’s Arms to Tressilian, and from Weedon and Ross road at its junction with the West Coast road to the river. Also, from Messrs Harman and Stevens, stating they were prepared to hand over the reserves asked for by the Board in Mr Creyke’s land as soon as the conveyances were made and paid for, and the Board agreeing to conform to certain regulations. The surveyor was directed to write to Messrs Harman and Stevens, and express the Board’s willingness to agree to the said resolutions. The surveyor was directed to write to Mr Jollie, as M.P.O. for the district, asking him, if possible, to get a resolution passed in the Council that one of the carriage doors on the railway might be left unlocked. The surveyor was also directed to employ no more day men than absolutely were required, till it was known the probable amount of the provincial grant to the district. Also to call for tenders for keeping the Station road and School road, as far as the Bealey road, in repair for four months. Also to advertise that all persons whose rates were unpaid by the 20th May, would be summoned without further notice. The pay-sheet, amounting to £319 18s Bd, having been adopted and passed, the Board adjourned.
