MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, May 28.

[Before H. P. Murray- A ynsley, and 0. R. Blakiston, Esqs., J.P's.]

Vagrancy.—Martha Jones, an old offender, who had been found sleeping in the stables of the Q.O.E. Hotel, and who received a very bad character from Mr Beattie, and chief detective Feast, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labor. Drunk and Disorderly.—Joseph Smith, arrested for drunkenness, was fined ss, being his first offence. Hugh Henry was fined 10s.

Drunk and Indecent Exposure.—Geo. Griffiths, charged with being drunk and committing an act of exposure in front of the Theatre, was fined 20s.

Drunk and Illegally on Premises.— John Baker and Archibald McDougall were charged with being found sleeping in the stables of the Warwick Hotel The arresting constable stated that Baker was drunk, but the other man was sober. Baker said that j\] r Simmonds of the Warwick Hotel was an old schoolmate of his, and when he applied to him and offered to pay for a bed, Simmonds told him to lie down in the stable, inspector Buckley told the Bench that Mr Simmonds had been sent for that morning at the request of McDougall, but he had declined to attend the Court. He (Simmonds) had complained repeatedly of men sleeping in his stables. McDougall, in reply to the Bench, said he understood he was to sleep at the Warwick Hotel, but when he went there late lie was told that all the beds were full. Both men asked to be let off lightly as they wished to get out of town to their work. Baker, who had been before the Bench for drunkenness a day or two previously, was fined 40s, or 48 hours, and McDougall os, or 24 hours. Affiliation. James Hazlehurst was brought up on warrant. Detective Feast said that the complainant had given her address as near the race-course. He had been up there the previous night, but could not find her, and would ask for a remand until Monday. He was certain that accused was the man named in the warrant. Remanded as asked, accused to be admitted to bail on his own recognisances iu t-he sum of £25,
