BOROUGH COUNCIL.
BAJAPOL Tuesday, June 29
On Tuesday evening an ordinary meeting of this. Council was held for the dispatch of ordinary business. Present—The Major, Crs Blackwell, Beharrel', Wearing, Porter, and Parnham, A circular letter from the Provincial Auditor, for iniormation regarding revenue and expenditure of the Council, how raised, and in what manner distributed, was read. The Mayor stated, according to his instructions to the town clerk, the circular had been replied to by the information asked for having been furnished to the Auditor. No committees’ reports were handed in. The town clerk stated the balance in hand was £2l 16s, and to pay the accounts that evening an overdiaft would have to be commenced.
On the motion of Or Parnham, seconded by Cr Wearing, the accounts—carpenters’ work. £6 19s 6d ; painting, £2 Is ; labor, £l7 18s; carting, £l2 11s 8d; foreman’s salary, £4 10s ; engineer of fire brigade and bridge keeper, £4 12s 8d ; town clerk, £3 8s ; total, £52 1b 4d—were passed. The Mayor, in reference to the state of the finances, asked the chairman of the works committee if the labor expense could not be lessened for a time. While the works in progress required to be carried out, he was not anxious to see the Council incur a large overdraft.
Cr Wearing, chairman of works committee, stated several of the streets had to be shaped before the new metal now ordered was planed on them, after which he would lessen the number of men at work. As he had men in whom he had every confience, it would, however, be worth while for the Council to endeavour to keep them on. It was advisable also that the different parts of the drainage system be completed. Cr Porter suggested that the number of men now employed was larger than it had hitherto been, but if the men were engaged in useful works he did not object. It was agreed that the works committee finish the works in hand if possible within next week.
Cr Blackwell pointed out the advisability for now removing a fence allowed to be put up across Hilton street, and moved —“ That Mr Eckerslcy be written to requesting him to remove the fence at present placed across Hilton street.”
Cr Wearing seconded the motion, which was agreed to. The Council adjourned.
