CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, July 10. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, E.M.] Drunk and Disorderly. Norman McDonald and Joseph Hawker were each fined ss. M Lunacy. —Charles Paddock, who attempted to commit suicide on Tuesday last by blowing himself up with gunpowder, was on the certificates of Drs Powell and Nedwill committed to the asylum. ' LYTTELTON. Friday, July 9. ; i (Before W. Donald, Kgq., R.M., and H, 8.. '■? Webb, J.P.) Larceny, Thomas Smith Hayward,!-, arrested by Constable Me Gorman, was charged' on remand with this offence. Robert Cole, sworn, said—l am licensee of the Lyttelton, Hotel. I remember Thursday morning last, Bth instant; I heard accused get up at a.m. in the morning; he was cook at my, hotel. Mrs Cole found a swag full of old; clothes that morning ; it was tied up withtwine from the kitchen. The kitchen girl; said it was the cook’s valise. I opened ifc and found a poker, a billy full of freshbutter, an old tablecloth, an old cruet, half a doasa table kaiyeg, a piece of bacon,
three flat irons, and some picWed eels I value the lot at about 30s. When I engaged the prisoner, he said he could mention several persons who could give him a good character. He said— I know you object to married men, as they are likely to take things out of the house to their homes, but my •wife is in Christchurch, so you need not fear that.” His usual time of getting un was five ; he had no necessity for getting up before. lam sure these things were in the house, and were moved on the morning of the Bth by prisoner. After hearing further evidence, the Bench said there was no doubt of accused’s guilt, and sentenced him to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor.
