COMMERCIAL.

No Important transactions in the grain market -during the week have come under our notice. 'Buyers of wheat are disinclined to give last week’s quotations, the English market having seriously given way, there being much less damage done to the, crop than was expected. Oats arc becoming quite a drug, and 2s 4d is the highest price now paid for feed purposes. Flour remains without alteration. Potatoes are still offering, but buyers will not give last week’s figure, the season being now somewhat advanced, and large imports from Warnambool into Auckland have lately been made. The, demand for dairy produce is falling oil', and value recedes. Buyers’ quotations are Prime milling wheat, 3s 0d to3s lid; do oats,2s 6d; feed oats, 28 4d; barley, 4s 3d; flour, £9 10s in sacks, £9 178 6d in 1001 b bags, .£lO 58 in 501 b bags; bran, £4 10s; sharps, £5 10s ; potatoes, £3 12s 6d to £3 15s; cheese, BJd; butter, lid; hams . and bacon, bare, ll^d; cloth, is. Teas move off in trade parcels at our last rates. We have very little to report in bottled ales and stouts : a few sales have been effected in quarts at Us 6d to 128 for best brands, and 7s 6d to 7s 9d for pints. Tobacco has been moving oilbetter, and sales have been effected at Is 7d to Is 0d for twists, according to brand ; Venus and Eaven being favourite brands, command the latter price readily. Leput 10s, move off slowly at Is B|d f.b. A shipment of Bass’s East India pale ale, now in port, has been taken up at £9 10s to £lO per hhd. Messrs J. T, Ford and Co report on the live stock market, for the week ending Friday, the 10th inst, as follows :—At the Canterbury Sale Yards on Wednesday last, 3850 sheep, U 3 head of cattle, and 23 pigs were brought forward, and in consequence of three previous markets being ovei supplied, the sale for the day was a drag throughout for all classes of stock, in fact, great difficulty was experienced by the different salesmen in quitting even at a reduction. We attribute the over supply in a great measure to the turnip feed running out, and compelling graziers to send their sheep forward rather than stock their young pastures, and are inclined to believe that those who can hold over until next month will meet much better prices. The price of mutton can only be quoted at from 3d to 3Jd per lb, and the top price for beet 358 per 100 lbs. There is also a great drag on store sheep, and we do not anticipate any improvement in this class of stock, at least for another month. Merino wethers, early shorn and in fair condition, arc worth 7s each. Merino ewes, in lamb to long-woolled rams, are bringing from 8s Gd each and upwards. Cross-breds, mixed sexes, from lls Gd to 14s, according to quality, wool, and condition. We sold on Wednesday last, for the Hon Edward Stafford, Hon Wm. Robinson, Messrs M. S. Dunedin. —Maclean Brothers report for the week ending 9th September, as follows: —Fat Cattle—As might have been anticipated, owing to the short supply last week, a tolerably full supply was brought forward yesterday, viz., 140 but as several of the principal buyers had supplied themselves privately, competition was less active than was generally expected, and about 60 head were turned out unsold. Bullocks realised from £lO to £lB, and cows from £8 to £l6, according to weight and quality. We quote prime beef at 45s per lOOlbs,'medium at 355. At the yards we sold 35 head, and privately we have placed several small lots, in all about 50 head. Fat Sheep—Contrary to expectation, the market yesterday was an exceedingly full one, some 3000 ' having been penned, nearly all good to prime cross-breds. Butchers, however, were well supplied by private deliveries, and a slow market was experienced, only about 2000 having found buyers at from 14s 6d to 19s, or equal to, say 4d per lb fully. At the yards we sold 250, and privately we have delivered 500 during the week. Store Cattle and Sheep—ln both descriptions the business during the week has been very slight. Well grown cattle were in request, as are also young sheep (merino and cross-bred), but there were few goffering, and for these such prices are asked as almost preclude buyers from operating. Horses—Good sound draught stock arc in fair demand. At the Commercial Sale Yards, on Saturday last, we sold 20, on account of Messrs Brogden and Sons and other vendors, at from £35 to £55 each. Good hacks and coachers are also saleable, but ordinary and inferior light horses are offering plentifully, and saleable only at low prices. Wool—We have no further advices from the home market. In the local market some small parcels of scoured have changed hands at a satisfactory figure, but beyond this there is no business doing. Sheepskins—Our sale to-day was more spirited than we expected, and prices obtained were considerably better than last week’s, the quality of the skins considered. Green cross-bred skins fetched from 6s 6d to 6s sd, and merinos from 4s 4d to 4s lod ; dry station skius from Is to 4s Bd, according to quality. Hides continue slow of sale, and cannot be quoted at over 3}d to 4d for wet salted per lb. Our sales to-day were at from 14s 6d to 2ls, according to weight and quality. Tallow —A few casks inferior only were offered. Grain—Wheat, prime milling quality, is readily saleable at 4s 6d to 4s 8d; ordinary. 4s 3d to 4s sd; and we have placed several large lots at these quotations. Barley, of inferior and ordinary quality, is neglected, and a very considerable quantity of this description is held for higher rates. Prime malting, on the contrary, is wanted, and saleable at up to 6s. For oats there is no demand for export, and transactions are consequently limited. Best feed commands 2s Sd; ordinary, 2s 6d to 2s 7d. Fofc. milling there is very little inquiry, but good samples may be quoted at 2s lOd. ENGLISH COMMERCIAL. The “ Daily Times ” publishes the following report—The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Circular of July 27th reports a large decline in British exports, and a dulness of trade. At a meeting of shareholders of the New Zealand Trust arid Loan Company on July 26th, the directors’ report was adopted. It showed a balance of undivided profits, on June 30th, of £6470. and recommended the payment of a dividend of 5s per share : making, with a like payment in January last, a distribution of 2 per cent, for the year, £1470 to be carried forward. Wool reports from the manufacturing districts state that an undimished quantity is going into consumption. Regarding the prospect for the ensuing series, a possibility must not be lost sight of that, to a certain extent, unfavorable influences may be extended by the recent commercial disasters, although, directly, they have touched the wool trade only in one district in the South of Scotland, and leading to the suspension there of several well - known manufacturing firms, besides involving considerable loss on many solvent houses. Inclement weather, and a consequent rise in the corn market, probably will not be without its effect on woollen, as well as every other manufacturing trade, unless before the commencement of the auctions, on the 17th prox, a succession of fine days should counteract, as in many districts it might, the evil effects of a heavy rainfall on growing crops. Tallow quotations are somewhat lower, 2709 casks sold realised 37s to 42s 6d for mutton, which shows some improvement, and 35s 9d to 418 for beef. Heather sales show a further decline of a farthing. The preserved meats market is quiet, no improvement. Two pound tins show a fractional advance owing to a scarcity. HempSales, £lo to £l9 and £l9 15s. New Zealand securities, 4i per cent, business. 95} to 95}. Bank of New Zealand,, business done, 20s, 21}; National, 45s Bd. City of Dunedin 6 per cent, Iq3 to 104; New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, old, 4j; Trust and Loan, 7d to 7}d; Otago and Southland Investment, } to } premium.
