Two men have been sent to gaol for seven days for the non-payment of the education rates.

Port Chalmers, October 2.

A destructive fire occurred in George street this morning about two o’clock, Robertson and Scott’s drapers’ shops was burned to the ground. The police and townspeople rendered every assistance in saving the goods, but owing to the paucity of water the amount saved was not large. Scott is insured in the New Zealand office. Robertson, who has just commenced business, was unfortunately not insured.
