TELEGRAPHIC NEWS.

* A uckland, October 7. The British Empire has arrived from London, eighty-two days out, with over 300 immigrants, all well. William Smith, for obtaining money and goods under false pretences, was sentenced to three years’ imprisonment. Arrived The Bengal, barque, from Adelaide, Sailed The Ryno, brigantine, for the Savage Islands. The ship John Rennie, for San Francisco, is ready for sea in the Manakau. Arrived early—The Hawea and Phoebe, from the South, Geahamstown, October 7. At a meeting held last night to consider the R< presentation Bill, a resolution was carried protesting against the Bill, as it deals unjustly with the electoral district of the Thames, and expressing the opinion that three additional members should be given to the Thames. An amendment was put to the effect that the meeting had no confidence in the desire of the present Government to do justice to the Thames in the matter of representation, and expressing a hope that the coming general election would place the Government of the country in the hands of men more competent to wield it, and influenced by more honest motives. This found many supporters, but was lost on the show of hands. A further resolution was carried to telegraph the resolutions to Major Atkinson, Sir G. Grey, and Mr O’Neill. Waimate, October 8. Early this morning Mr Merry’s store was burnt to the ground. It was insured in the Standard for £BOO. The loss is nearly covered.
