The R.M. s.s. Ringarooma, Capt John M'Lean, with the New Zealand portion of the European mail, via Suez, arrived at Port Chalmers Railway Pier at 6.45 a.m. on Saturday, The Ringarooma made the run from Port Phillip Heads to the Blufl in four days and fourteen hours forty minutes, out of which time she was hove to twenty hours, so that her absolute steaming time was three days eighteen hoars and forty minutes. According to the log of Mr Whitford, the chief officer, the Ringarooma left Hobson’s Bay at 5.16 p.m. on the 16th mst, cleared Port Phillip Heads at 7.40 p.m, and passed Swan Island at forty-five minutes after noon next day. She carried strong W.N.W. winds right from the Heads until after midnight of the 19th, and was followed by a high and breaking sea. At midnight the wind increased to a terrific hurricane, with fearful sea, leaving the choice of no alternative but to heave to, and to the wind the Ringarooma was accordingly brought, and lay there until 3 a.m. on the 21st. The gale, however, had broken three hours before that, but as the steamer was well up with the land, whilst the weather was exceedingly thick, she was kept stationary until day broke.
