MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, November 2. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, R.M., and C, J Bridge, Esq., J.P.)
Drunk and Disorderly.— For this offence Patrick Butler was fined 40s, John Watson 20s, and Mary Nimo 6s. Larceny from a Dwelling. —Compte Emile Zanker was charged with this offence. Detective Kirby deposed to the arrest of the prisoner. Witness went in company with Detective McGorman. They found him on board the steamship Halcyon. Witness charged him -with stealing £44, one silver watch and gold chain, and a purse from a dwellinghouse in Christchurch. Searched him and found the watch and chain produced; also purse and receipt and £33 17s iu money. Prisoner said, “ I was sleeping in the room with him (Neilson) at the Wellington Hotel. I saw him put the things under his pillow. I got up about two o’clock, took the things from under his pillow, and left the house. ” Peter Neilson called, stated that he was a shepherd, but at present resided in Christchurch. Last Saturday night was in company with prisoner at ah >ut a quarter to eleven o’clock, and went with him to the Wellington hotel. The prisoner and himself slept iu the same room. At that
time had in his'poikession a silver watch and chain, and about £44 in cash in a purse; also the receipt for the watch and chain. Had bought the watch from Petersen and Co’s a few days before. Put all the articles mentioned underneath his pillow when prisoner was in the room. When he awoke in the morning he missed the prisoner and also his property. Identified the articles produced. His total loss amounted to £6l. Albert Gunderson, of the firm of Petersen and Co, recognised the last witness as the purchaser of the watch and chain produced. Gave him the receipt produced, The value of the watch antichain was £l7. The prisoner, who did not ask any questions of the witnesses, was committed for trial at the next session of the Supreme Cpurt. * - — ~ " LYTTELTON."" “'* Monday, November' U • \ [Before W. Donald, Esq, B.M.] Drunkenness. —Duncan Mclntyre, arrested by Constable Hayward for this offence, was fined 10a or forty-eight hours. Drunkenness and Fighting.— Henry King and Thomas Sullivan, two seamen belonging to the Lactura, were charged by Constable Hayward with this offence. From the evidence of the constable, Mr Fletcher, and Mr G. Brown, it appeared that the 'accused had on yesterday afternoon (Sunday,, created a disturbance at the watermen’s house on the wharf, causing a crowd to collect. The Bench inflicted a fine of £l, which was paid by the captain of the ship.
