MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, November 23. (Before G. L. Hellish, Esq., R.M.) Stealing erom the Till. —John Smith was charged with stealing two £1 not« 3 from the till of the Rakaia Hotel. From the evidence it appeared that the morning of the previous day accused was in the bar of the hotel. The barman had occasion to leave the bar for a short time, and on his return he found the accused behind the counter with the £1 notes in his hand, and on looking into the till he saw that the notes were missing. He took the notes from the prisoner and the latter then walked away from the hotel. Mr Robinson, the landlord, afterwards followed the man, and asked him to return but he would not, and on Mr Robinson attempting to compel him he drew a sheath knife and said if he \ I iced his hands

stolen them. Inspector Feast deposed to prisoner having been convicted several times and to his having only just completed a sentence. Sentenced to six months imprisonment, with hard labour. Wife Desertion. —Conrad Shot was charged on summons with deserting his wife and two children. Mr Cowlishaw appeared for the defendant. The evidence showed that defendent had not deserted his wife, and that she was given to habits of drinking. Case dismissed.
