The Globe. THURSDAY, MAY 25, 1876.

We think we have just cause of complaint against the City Council and the Eire Brigade. Last evening the ceremony of laying the foundation stone of a new fire brigade station in this city took place, in the presence of a large concourse of people. As is usual on these occasions copies of the local journals were placed in the bottle deposited in a cavity in the stone. When we say " copies" of the local journals, that refers to our morning contemporaries, and here is the cause of our dissatisfaction. The Globe of that evening contained a lengthened account of the very important competitive trial of the Brigade, not one word of which appeared in the morning papers. We should, therefore, have expected that the only paper which had reported the trial at length would, even to the exclusion of the others, have been placed entire under the stone. Our readers will hardly believe that such ingratitude on the part of some one connected with the proceedings could have existed as that only a portion of the Globe was so inserted. That evening's issue was carefully mutilated of the report referred to, and f hus succeeding generations will he unaware of the fact that, even at this early period of its history, Christchurch possessed a thoroughly independent paper, and that paper the Globe. We feel sure that the slight was unintentional, but still the fact remains that, by such mutilation, the fourth estate of this city was treated with great indignity.
