Melbourne, May 26.
Every insurance office is involved in the fires from the sum of £IOOO to £SOOO, < xcept the London and Liverpool and Globe. The insurance covers £90,000. A number of the principal merchants had goods in Mr Shaw’s bond, valued at £150,000. All the suburban brigades were absent at Ballarat.
The National Reform League, at a meeting last night, seriously considered the propriety of taking steps to impeach Sir Wm. Stawell for his late political action. Sydney, May 26.
The vote for the New Zealand Cable subsidy has passed. Mr B. Oruickshank, of Auckland, has been appointed the officer to make the contract and agreement for this colony, under the Agreements Validating Act.
Sydney, May 27.
The Pacific mail subsidy has passed. During the discussion the Postmaster said he believed the contractors were anxious to change the route to Auckland or the Bay of Islands. Mr, Parkes, adverting to the probability of the change of route as suggested, said they would be all in favour of New Zealand. Mr. Burns said the Government has no intention to propose a change, although the contractors have expressed a desire to withdraw.

The chess match players have received intimation from Dunedin that they would not finish their games. Auckland holds the winning position in seven games, the other three are even. Auckland telegraphed back that they would be ready to go on at eight tonight. If Dunedm fails to appear Auckland becomes the winner.
It is stated that on the return of Judge Gillies, the Superintendent will take action in the Supreme Court relative to the alleged unlawful native land purchase. Auckland, May 27.
The brig Sarah from Melbourne and Wellington, for Waugaroa in ballast, went ashore on the reef near Whangaruri. It is was blowing a heavy gale off* Cape Brett, and being unable to get the vessel ofi' the land she dropped both anchors, when the port chain broke, and the vessel commenced drifting ashore. The boat was safely launched, and all the crew got safe ashore. The vessel drifted right over the reef, smashing in her bottom, and was c- s': high on the beach where she lies a complete wreck.
Wellington, May 27.
The Government have effected arrangements with the New Zealand Shipping Company by which that company will have the cor" veyance of immigrants to this colony durii g the ensuing year. The terms of the agreement are understood to be very favorable to the colony, and at a lower rate than previous arrangements. , • •».
