CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, June 24. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.) Drunk, and Disorderly, —Two inebiates who appeared for the first time, were each fined sa. - Drunk and Fighting. —Michael Lawlor, charged with drunkenness and fighting in the street, was fined 20s. Obtaining -Board by False Pretences —Alfred Kerr, a respectable looking young man, was brought up on warrant charged with this offence. The accused had been arrested at Lyttelton the previous day, and ask d tbe detective whether it could not be squared by his father. Mrs LeMasieurer, living in Whately road, said the prisoner had come to her house on Monday, the 15th May, and asked to be accommodated with board and residence. He told her his name was George Pierce ; that he had recently arrived from Dunedin, and was to obtain employment at the New Zealand Insurance Go’s office on the following Monday. He gave her to understand after that day that he was employed in that office, and went out every day apparently on business. He said he was paid monthly, and remained there five weeks without paying her anything, leaving on the 20r.h June, and did not say he was going. She onlj allowed him to remain there, believing from hia representations that he was employed as stated. Evidence was given by Ji. Rogers, of the Pacific Boarding House, where the accused had stajed for six weeks, representing he was employed as related by the first witness. He' remained at • the Rogers’ house for six weeks. Thomas Calpan, clerk in the New Zealand Insurance Go’s office, stated that accused was employed in that office for a month, He left on the 26th March, and was paid £lO for his services. Sentenced to one month’s imprisonment with hard labor.
