MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Friday, August 25.

[Before G. L. Lee, Esq," and Dr Back, J.P's.J Drunk and Disorderly.—An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined ss.

LARpßNy.—John E. Taylor, alias Thompson, was charged with stealing a pair of boots from .the shop of Mr J. Woodward, High street. Accused, while in a state of intoxication, had attempted to pawn them at Stewart's pawnshop, Lichfield street. A son of Mr Woodward's deposed to having hung the pair of boots outside his father's shop the previous day. They were tieketed 18s 6d. Accused, in reply to the Bench, said he knew nothing of having stolen the boots, as he was drunk at the time. It was shown that prisoner had been repeatedly of similar offences, and he was sentenced to twelve months' imprisonment with hard labor.

LYTTELTON. Friday, August 25. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Breach of Gaolers' and Prisoners' Act.—Robert Lightbody waß charged by Warden M'lntyre with liotering opposite the g ol where the prisoners were at work, acd using abusive language on Thursday lastThe prisoner said he requested the warder to imprison him, but did not abuse him. Ser-geant-major O'Grady stated accused was strongly under the influence of drink that day. The Bench sentenced prisoner to one week's imprisonment with hard labor. Assault. —Pearson v Pearson. Adjourned for a week to allow of the parties (who were husband and wife) arranging a separation.
