MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, October IS. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq, R.M.j Drunk and Disorderly.— Thomas Henderson, charged with drunkenness, was lined 10s. Ellen Jordan, 10s and cab hire. An inebriate, who appeared for the first time, was fined 10s, John Shirteliff, arrested for drunkenness, and who had been rescued out of the river at half-past twelve this morning by Sergeant Hughes, was lined ss. Lunacy from Drink.—John Freeman, who was suffering from the effects of drink, was remanded for eight days for medical treatment. Wife Desertion. —H. S. Saunders was charged on warrant with having deserted his wife and five children at Christchurch on 9th October, Mrs Saunders stated that on above date her husband left her and his family without any means of support. _ After he had his dinner he said he was going out for his cheque, and he did not return afterwards. Witness had heard that after her husband went away he paid the rent, after he received his money. In reply to the Bench accused expressed regret that he had gone on the spree. Inspector Feast said the accused had been employed by Mr Innes, brewer, as clerk and traveller. His Worship, after administering a lecture to the accused, said he would let the matter stand over for a week to see what course he would take in the meantime for the support of his wife and family.
