At the village of Batak there were some awful outrages, and at other villages where there was a show of resistance, 3000 inhabitants were massacred, mostly women and children. The churches and buildings were levelled to the ground ; mothers were ravished in the presence of their daughters, and daughters in the presence of their mothers, sisters, and brothers.
