COMMERCIAL.

Transactions in the pram market during the week exhibit a continued eager demand for wheat, and also a decided Inclination to hold oats for better prices. Stocks ot prime milling wheat have run extremely low, and holders ask 5s 2d; for second samples 4s 10d has been given, some millers being now eompelled for want of better quality to use this largely for mixing purposes. Oats have taken a sudden tendency upwards, a few small lots having changed hands at 2s about the commencement of the week, but this figure we now consider below market value, holders declining to sell under 2s 3d for prime milling samples. JMo enquiry for barley Is experienced, and there is none offering. Millers’ quotations continue at £l4 in sacks f.0.b.; demand quiet. Bran and sharps are in fair supply at £4 and £4 10s f.o.b. respectively. In potatoes little beyond the ordinary retail trade is being done, prices nominally 57s 6d. Butter is coming in freely, and buyers offer 9d. For cheese there is little enquiry at over 6id. Curers’ quotations for hams and bacon are unaltered at 9d bare, and S£d cloth, ■We have very little improvement to record in the import markets, trade being particularly dull. Sugars have received the most attention during the week, several large sales have been effected at £32, i.b, for fine white crystals; brewers’ crystals have also been quitted at £3l 10s to £3l los, i.b; the ordinary trade sales have been fair, at from £43 to £44105, d.p, per ton for fine to finest whites. In teas there have been a few trade lots quitted at full rates. Hennessy’s brandy in bulk—A line of 20 qr-casks has been placed at 7s 9d; several holders are now asking Bs, and decline to do business under that figure; case can be purchased at 31s 6d, at which price considerable business has been done. A large parcel of Campbelton whiskey has been quitted at price withheld, but believe 5s 3d was about the price paid. Dunville’s case has been sold to arrive at i7s, i.b. Kerosene—As high as 2s 9d, d.p, has been paid for small lets of this article, owing to scarcity of stock; we note several small lots have found their way here from Dunedin market. Candles are in better inquiry, and realise Od to 10$d for best brands. Woolpacks are selling freely, but the price is far from satisfactory, 3s 3d to 3s 4d is top price for ordinary make; we hear of some country storekeepers selling at 3s Od; this surely will leave very small If any margin. Tobacco meets with ordinary trade sales at full rates. We have nothing new to report in fencing wire and galvanised iron; sales have been on small scale at our last quotations. Cement—l'his article is still dull; we note tenders have been called for 400 barrels for the Drainage Board; the quantity to arrive is very large, and stocks held at present are considerable. English hops—There have been several inquiries for this line, but stocks are so very low that we cannot quote anything but a nominal figure for prime growth. Bottled ales and stouts—We have very little to report In these lines, beyond usual small sales to the trade.
