LYTTELTON REGATTA.
A public meeting was held at the Colonists’ Hall, Lyttelton, on Friday, September 14th, to arrange for holding the usual regatta on January Ist, 1878. His Worship the Mayor, who had conTened the meeting, occupied the chair. The Hon. Treasurer (Mr J. C. Eoddington) read the balance sheet for 1877, from which it appeared that the total receipts had been £516 15s Bd, and the expenditure £473 15s sd, leaving a balance to credit of £-13 Os 3d. The hon. treasurer, in moving the reception and adoption of the balance sheet, stated that the £516 mentioned as total receipts did not include cups, with the exception of that competed for in the Canoe race. They had, therefore, to add to that amount the New Zealand Shipping Company’s cup, value 25 guineas; Shaw, Saville and Co.’s tup, value So guineas j Mr Proctor’s cup,
value £lO ; and Mr IT. E. Nathan’s cup, value £3. The money value of the prizes competed for on New Year’s Day had bee;. £424. He might stale that, beside the £43 which they had in the Bank, the committee had a cup which they had purchased during the year with a portion of their assets, and, as the cup was valued at £75, they had really £llß in hand, or a few pounds more than last year. The cup in question was a remarkably handsome one, and as the committee were enabled to purchase it at a considerable reduction they had done so, thinking it a more profitable investment than letting their money lie in the Bank at 5 per cent, interest. He was able, therefore, to congratulate them upon the state of their finances. The accounts had been duly audited by Messrs W. Ward and G. Jenkins and found correct. He begged to move their reception and adoption. Seconded by Mr Lance and carried unanimously. Mr W. H. Eyes then proposed, “That the usual regatta be held on January Ist, 1878.” Seconded by Mr Geo. Mackay and carried. On the' motion of Air Cunningham, seconded by Dr. AlcDonald, Air J. C. Boddington was re-elected hon. treasurer. Air Boddington then moved that Air H. C. Jacobson be re-elected hon. secretary. Seconded by Air Cunningham and carried. Messrs H. P. Murray-Aynslcy, H. Allwright, George Agar, P. Cunningham, W. Cameron, W. D’Authreau, W. H. Eyes, R. Forbes, W. Horne, 11. Hawkins, W. H. Lance, H. N. Nalder, T. A. W. Parsons, C. A. Rich, A. Reid, G. Tayler, E. Ward, H. R. Webb, J. S. Willcox, W. Young, J. Yule, Drs. Rouse and AlcDonald, and Captains F. D. Gibson, H. McLellan, T. McClatchie, and AY. Whitby, were appointed on the committee, with power to add to their number. It was agreed that the first meeting of the committee should be held at the Colonists’ Hall committee room on Tuesday evening, September 28th. Air W. Holmes called attention to the necessity there existed for making provision with regard to holding shore sports on New Year’s Day ; the success attending those held in London street last year fully showed how they were appreciated by the public. After some discussion it was agreed to leave the matter to the consideration of the committee.
It was resolved, “That the committee appointed be empowered to elect a commodore, vice-commodore, stewards, and judges, and to do all that is necessary for successfully carrying out the regatta.” Merrs W. Ward and Q-. Jenkins were re-appointed auditors. Mr J. Snosswell, jun., spoke at length regarding the boats allowed to compete in the whaleboat race, advocating strongly that the race should be altered to one for inrigged gigs. At present only Timaru, Akaroa, and Lyttelton competed in the whaleboat race, but if it were altered to an inrigged gig race, as he proposed, he believed they should have plenty of boats from Christchurch and Ivaiapoi. After discussion, it was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the committee. Votes of thanks having been unanimously accorded to the retiring olllcers and the chair, the meeting adjourned.
