CANTERBURY EWE FAIR.

The annual ewe fair, following on the sale of rams, was held yesterday at the grounds of the Canterbury Agricultural and Pastoral Association. The entries on the catalogue were 471, or about one-third less than last year, and even of this number one lot of fifty was not penned. The attendance was very limited, and the only competition which took place was for Mr R. "W ilkin s four prizetakers at the Lancaster, Taunton, and Christchurch shows, and their progeny—six splendid hoggetts. The old sheep and three of the hoggets fell, after some brisk bidding, to Mr James Wilkin, who is forming a stud flock, and the premier three to Mr Michael Studholme, who paid twenty-one guineas each for bis choice. For Beveral of the lots there were no bids, and a few were passed in, the prices offered not reaching owners' reserve. The following are the sales made: —

At the conclusion of the ewe sale Messrs Matson anil Co. placed twenty nine Leicester rams, mixed ages, at 13s Gd each, on account of Mr J. P. Murray, the purchaserheiutr Mr J. AV. Eountrec; and on account of Mr H. AV. Packer, twenty two-tooth Leicester rams were sold to Mr J. T. Brown at three guineas each. The same firm sold privately during the day one of Mr J. Grigg’s Lincoln rams for three guineas, and let ten others for the season at five guineas each. Messrs E. AVilkin and Co. sold privately, on account of Mr J. B. Sutton, one Lincoln ram for ten guineas, to Mr J. Boag; and on account of Mr Thomas Sutton, four Lincoln rams for nine guineas each, to the same gentleman . ,
