THE LONGWOOD REEFS.
Eumour has been busy during the week (says the " Western Star") with regard to the reefs in the Longwood. The Brothers Hayes have applied for a lease of a piece of ground which they have been prospecting constantly for some years, and their application is considered a good omen. If these gentlemen are about to meet with a tardy reward, it is nothing more than they richly deserve, as the annals of mining history will scarcely show a better instance of pluck and enterprise than they have displayed. The ground is situated within a mile of the Wallace Prospecting Company's claim. A gentleman from Queenstown prospected the reefs during the week, and expressed himself well satisfied with the prospects. The Wallace Prospecting and Quartz Mining Company although they have accepted the resignation of the prospectors, have determined upon protecting their interest in the meantime.
A number of shareholders of the Wallace Prospecting Association took an outing yesterday, the direction being the Longwood, in order to obtain if possible some insight as to the future outcome of their endeavours. A start was made by boat at 8.30 a.m., tide and wind being dead against them, and in consequence they did not roach their destination till 2 30. After visiting the old Wallace Company's first tunnel, which had slightly caved in, and other portions of the ground, a return start was made. Before long they were met by about 30 men, burdened with tents, blankets, &c , making their way to the place the party hud just left. This caused comment, and it was surmised that these men had been engaged by Hayes Bros, and Mallaghan to work and protect their claims. But, of course, this was only surmise. After a very arduous day's work our friends reached town about 8 p.m., being fully convinced that patience and porseverance were only required to enable them to reap a rich reward.
