SERVICE APPEALS
CASES HEARD AT GREYMOUTH.
The Armed Forces Appeal Board sat at Greymouth yesterday afternoon. Mr W. Meldrum presided in association with Messrs P. J. McLean and A. Panther. Mr C. F. Shapcott was Secretary. Tne appeal against overseas service for John Albert Essex by his mother, Mrs C. Essex, was reviewed. Evidence was given by J'ames Essex, father of the reservist. He stated that the health of his wife and himself made it necessary to have his son at home. He had not yet been called up, and there was no .objection to his serving in the ,army—-only against overseas service.—Adjourned sine die.
The Paroa E.P.S. Committee appealed for Clement Herbert Kitto, a labourer, working for the Railway Department, against Home Guard service. Kitto also appealed himself. He said that his health had suffered through an accident. He was doing ambulance work in the E.P.S. and was taking a St. John Ambulance course. John A. Hudson, Secretary of the Central Committee of the Grey County E.P.S., said that the Committee supported the appeal and gave details of Kitto’s training and service.—The appeal was granted, subject to Kitto’s remaining in the medical unit of the E.P.S. James Francis Bond, a sawmill fiddler, was appealed for against Home Guard service by the West Coast Sawmillers’ Association. He also appealed on his own behalf forwarding a statement that his work at the mill made it hard for him to attend parades afterwards.—Ajourned sine die.
An appeal by < Mrs. Edna E. E Boyes for the release from camp of Kenneth Boyes and against overseas service was heard in committee. The appeal for release from camp was declined, and on the other appeal the reservist was not required to serve outside N.Z.
The District Manpower Officer (Mr. G G. M. Mitchell) appealed for the release from camp of Vincent Edwin Thomas (on review). He said that, reservist was Assistant Manpower Officer and carried out numerous important duties, The Department could not find another officer of equal status to take his place.— Adjourned sine die.
The Post and Telegraph Department appealed for Gordon Reginald B. Bowman, radio telegraphist. Mr. A. W. Swap, Chief Postmaster, said that Bowman had been with the Department for 16 years.—Adjourned sine die. The Health Department appealed for Jamqs Linford, and Arthur Edward George Knight, health inspectors. Evidence was.given by Mr. T. Pargeter, District Health Inspector, who put in a statement on the duties of the inspectors. A letter in support of the appeal was received from Dr. T. Fletcher Telford, District Medical Officer of Health. Adjourned for three months for review.
Dalgetv and Co (Mr. A. M. Jamieson) appealed for Michael George B. Kelly, a salesman (on review). N. B. McCallum, manager for the company at Grevmouth, said that another man could not be sent to replace Kelly.—Adjourned for three months for review, the chairman intimating that the company should consider seeking the release from camp of a man of lower medical grading. Arahura Gold Dredge. Ltd., appealed for Norman Pratt, a metallurgist. Evidence was also given by Mr. Ellis in this case. Pratt had special qualifications, and it was essential that the dredge have a metallurgist.—Adjourned sine die. . Associated Gold Dredges appealed for George Eric Logie, fitter and welder. C. Cotter, manager of the company gave evidence of the work done by Logie, who held special qualifications.—Adjourned sine die. Ngahere Gold Dredge, Ltd, appealed for James Mouat. a tractor driver. T. Blackie, manager of the comany. said that Mouat and his partner were the only two contractors the company had for bush clearing. The bush to be cleared at present was of a heavier nature i than that previously.—Adjourned sine die. Kanieri Gold Dredge, Ltd, appealed for William James Bruce, an electrician. W. J. Ellis, manager gave evidence.—Adjourned sine die. Appeals for the following were stood down: —Norman Hopkins, apprentice joiner (Mrs. Hopkins); against overseas service; Russell Aicken Webber (Mrs. B. Webber), for release from camp: Walter Herbert Conza, labourer (Higgins Bros), for release from Defence Engineering Corps; John Roderick Warren, diamond driller (Mines Department) ; Clarence Edward Bourke pie cart proprietor; Frederick Galletly cinematograph operator (Westland Talkies).
