The Minister of Transport (Hon. J. O’Brien) visited Hokitika, yesterday This morning he will leave by air for Haast and Okuru, returning in the evening. He will leave on return to Wellington to-morrow evening.
Mr. and Mrs. T. Eccleslield. of Kokatahi, returned yesterday from Invercagill.
Rev. Father J. Holohan 'and Rev. Father D. Healy left yesterday morning for Christchurch.
Mrs. G. D. Smart and Miss M. D. Smart returned from Dunedin yesterday.
Lieut-Colonel C. R. Duke, Area Commander for the Home Guard, is at present a patient in the Grey River Hospi'tal.
The engagement is announced of Joan Olive, eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. Roberts. Fitzherbert Street, Hokitika, and Wilford James, only son of Mr. and the late Mrs. W. T. Begg, Totara Flat.
Mrs. T. Kiely and Miss Evelyn Kiely left 'yesterday for Christchurch where the later will be a competitor at the Christchurch Competitions Festival. Miss Patsy Kiely of Christchurch, and formerly a’ well known competitor at the Greymouth Competitions, will also be competing. Guests at Revington’s include: Messrs C. Perkins, J. Arnott, G. Bird, Paul Dupre, F. W. Bostock, Mr. and Mrs. R. Duncan (Christchurch), Mr. and Mrs. J. Robertson, Mrs. J. Pethybridge (Wellington), Mr. J. Bachelor (Rotorua), Mr. and Mrs. Geo. Cant (Oamaru), Mrs. G. Staffen (Ashburton).

The death occurred at Reefton yesterday of Miss Catherine Ann Morris after a short illness. Deceased was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Morris, of Reefton. She was born at Reefton, and, with her sisters, conducted the hostel at Maruia. She was well known and respected in the district. She became ill five weeks ago at Maruia, and removed to Reefton, where her death occurred suddenly. She leaves four sisters, Mrs. M. J. Dunpan (Wellington), and Misses Eleanor, Cecilia, and Sarah (Reefton); and two brothers, John (Carterton) and William (Reefton).
