VOLUNTEER MATTERS.
THE DEFENCE MINISTER’S POLICY. NEW REGULATIONS. FAVORABLE ALTERATIONS. [FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Wellington, last night. The policy of the Defence Minister appears to be to wipe out the country corps which are not up to the minimum strength and are not in a state of efficiency, and to encourage larger corps in the centres of population, into which it should be a privilege to get admittance, and in which a feeling of egprit dfi corps would be generated. Within the last week three corps have disappeared from the list as being below their strength. I understand that the new volunteer regulations will shortly be issued. Instead of the rule which requires twothirds of a company to attend drill in order to constitute a parade, the new regulations only require one-half of the company to be present. Under this arrangement the volunteers will be afforded opportunities of making up for the reduction in the capitation grant. It is anticipated that the alteration will be favorably received by the volunteer force.
