Tariff and. Property Tax.

TARIFF PASSED COUNCIL.' PAYMENT OF PROPERTY TAX VALUERS [from our own correspondent. ] Wellington, last night. The new tariff passed the ordeal nf the Legislative Council last evening, and was put through all its stages. Some 'further discussion took place on the’motion for the second reading, the including "the Hnn Messrs Olliver. J. W. Wilsnn, Reynolds, J.JC.'Richmond,'Menzies, and Dr Grace." The taxation proposals were again warmly The Attorney-General’said|ifJ]it Sheen practical he would liked to have seen a Freetrade policy, but in the present condition of the colonv this was impossible. He was a thorough Freetrader, but it wasjnecessary to get revenue. The second reading was agreed to on the voices. The BUI passed through Committee without amendment, and wasjread a third time and parsed. The startling statement is made in a letter received bv Mr Goldie from a resident of Northeofe that propertv tax valuers are, paid nronortionallv on their valuation. While Mr Goldie is sceptical on this point he is asking the Government the terms on which it, is proposed to engage'valuers for the triennial property tax valuations. The Government do not intend to appoint anv assessors for the Boroughs for the purposes of property tax valuations, but a Bill will probably be brought in to enable the Commissioner to avail himself of the valuations made bv the municipalities themselves. It is considered that a saving of £5,000 will be thus effected.
