Tuedsay, July, 1888. THE MURDERER'S FATE.
Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country's, Thy God's, and truth’!.
Ths fate of the murderer Turei carries with it a touching significance, and while but a few hours before everyone wee ready to de> nounoe the brutality of the human butohen the swiftness with which he has been over taken by Nemesis and doomed to a terrible death at his own hands, must tend to soften the hearts of those who think over the matter. But apart from any feeling of sentiment, the sequel is a happy one for all concerned. It may bo urged by strict theologians that the suicide only doubled the crime, but we are inclined to the utilitarian view that the end fully atonud for the means. It will moan the
saving of an enormous expense, and will avert what might otherwise be very serious complications, owing to the irritated feelings of the relatives and friends of the murdered woman. There will now be no need for the cumbrous formalities which the English law entails in such a case, nor for the hangman’s rope, which it must otherwise have come to. In cases of a like nature, though with different methods on the part of the murderers, it has always been found difficult to contend with the circumstances, and the result has never been satisfactory, excepting perhaps to the murderers themselves. In this instance all the trouble has been saved. Beyond a few tears of regret for the unfortunate victim and a pang of sorrow at the awful event, the whole affair will soon, except to the immediate relations, be obscured in the dim memories of the past.
