RETRENCHED.
A word or two will not be out of place with regard to the severance of Mr A. Y. Rose’ connection with the Borough Council office ; otherwise it is just possible that the reason of the severance may not be quite understood by those who are unacquainted with the circumstances. The sole reason was the prevailing spirit of retrenchment. It was found there was not sufficient scope for the services of Mr Ross —that he had outgrown the position that he had many years previously been selected for, and that while, as was only natural, he expected remuneration as his capabilities increased with lengthened years of service, the office he occupied did not expand in proportion, At the time the matter was brought forward, this was made perfectly clear by the Councillors, who one and all expressed entire satisfaction with the way the duties were performed and there was a general expression of regret that Mr Ross could not be retained and rewarded a higher remuneration All this is well known, and our only object in referring to the matter is that in case Mr Ross should think of applying tor a position in any outside district, the way he has carried out his duties as junior clerk in the borough office may be regarded as a high testimonial in his favor, and whatever he may undertake we wish him all success.
