THE PROTECTION BANQUET.
[from our own correspondent.] Wellington, last night. At the Protection Banquet on Saturday night it ia estimated that over 1000 persons were present, end of these more than half were of the artisan class, from foundries and factories in Wellington. It may be imagined that the tone of the affair socially was not first class, from a snobocratic point of view. There was a good deal of enthusiasm, however, which, assisted by articles of New Zea land produce (liquid and solid) tended to give plenty of life to the affair and everyone seemed thoroughly to enjoy themselves. Altogether there were about 100 different presents in the way of eatables and drinkables and the display was excellent. Some good speeches were delivered, but owing to the size of the Hall and the number present only a few of the speakers could be thoroughly heard.
