FOOTBALL.
The third and final match between the Gisborne and Rovers Clubs, for Mr J. R. Scott’s Cup, was played on Saturday afternoon, and resulted in a win for the Rovers, who now become the possessors of the Cup, having won two out of three matches. The Gisborne forwards were far superior to those of the Rovers, but the half-backs were decidedly weak. The first spell ended in favor of the Rovers. The Gisborne forwards made some splendid rushes, Bourke and Loomb showing up well. On one occasion Bourke dribbled the ball through the Rovers’ backs, and would undoubtedly have dribbled the ball over the line and secured a try had not one of the latter caught hold of and held him. Shortly after this Bourke made another rush, and picking up the ball ran in and secured a try, which Bull failed to convert into a goal. On resuming play the ball was kicked over the blues’ line, and some of the reds following up smartly, the ball was touched down. Lewis converted this try into a goal. In the second spell the ball was mulled by a Gisborne back, and Simon catching it secured a try, the kick at goal being a failure.
