Water Main Contract.
At the Borough Council on Tuesday night, in accordance with his notice of motion Cr Whinray moved that Mr Humphreys’ account for extras in connection with his water main contract be reconsidered. His reason was mainly based on the idea that there was a big reduction made. He thought the Council might reconsider the account. Cr Joyce seconded. The motion was carried. Mr Humphreys said if the accounts were looked into the Council would see he was out of pocket through the £l4 being deducted off his account. Cr Whinray said it was quite possible Mr Humphreys might nave been put to some expense on some items. Mr Humphreys said on one place he had provided a safety valve, a ball valve was specified, and that made a difference of £3. Mr Whinray thought the £3 should be conceded to Mr Humphreys. Mr Harding thought the matter bad been left in Mr Townley’s hands, and he was capable of giving his opinion. The Mayor did not think it was fair to Cr Townley that they should give the accounts back to him again Cr Ponsford was quite sure Mr Humphreys had made a mistake but he would have to bear the brunt of it. Cr Joyce did not think the accounts should be thrown back to Mr Townley. Cr Whinray’s motion was negatived. Cr Townley said with reference to extra lead, etc., charged for, he had gone through the accounts carefully with the Engineer and they considered, the charges were too heavy. He thought the £lO 16s 6d and the 15s should be ample for the stop valve, and allowance for fixing. Cr Whinray said he would move that the balance of Mr Humphreys’ charge for his item, £1 7s should be paid. Cr Joyce seconded.—Negatived.
