WRETCHED BUFFOONERY Oca Legislative Assembly has degenerated into a very low body to what it was in years past. A new member ot the House has been making himsel! notorious lately by his persistent advooaoy of a State Bank. But if we can excuse a member for airing his opinions on a soheme which he has fully convinced himself upon there can be nothing but condemnation for that buffoonery with which Mr Verrall’s explanations are greeted. His conduct at any rate appears to shine out in quite a clear light in comparison with that of some of the other members. The following paragraph from a Wellington paper conveys an impression which certainly does not inspire us with pride }n our representatives It was simply deplorable that so much of the House's time should have been wasted yesterday in listening to Mr Verrall's long-winded explanation of his crude and impracticable—it not absurd—scheme for a State Bank of Issue. We said ‘I listening,” but there was not much of that, for most of the members, when not yelling with laughter at the grotesque utterances of the new member for Ashley, were too eagerly engaged in pelting him with poverty-stricken jokes and ■mall-beer witticisms to be paying any attention at all to what he said. The whole eoene was one of wretched buffoonery) and reflected little credit upon the House.
