“The Oil Industry.”
[to ths editor] Sib,—Such is the heading of an article in your evening contemporary of the Bth inst., which winds up with the following remarkable statement—“ The influence of Mr Weaver’s return cannot fail to ba beneficial to the district.” Now I fail to see where the certainty and why it will be beneficial to the district. It may be beneficial to the oil industry and therefore inferentially to the district, but Weaver will have to do something more than return here. We want the well tested and if he does not do that he had far better have stopped away and let those do it who are both able and willing. The fulsome adulatiqq of Mr Weaver, and which has pervaded the tone of your contemporary, especially ie somewhat sickening. Mr Weaver may be a good driller, but even then there are local men amongst us who have shown they can put down a well in a quarter of the time. And again, the South Pacific have nothing to thank Mr Weaver for—he has and always will study himself first. I like to see a man that will study the shareholders interests a bit and show a little energy.—l am, Ao. SilabehoLDES.
