The Gisborne Standard AND COOK COUNTY GAZETTE Published every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday Morning.

Tuesday, September 11, 1888. MR REES IN ENGLAND.

Be just and fear not; Let all the ends thou aim’st at be thy country’s, Thy God’s, and truth’s.

As we predicted, Mr Rees has applied himself to his settlement scheme with a tenacity which is characteristic of that gentleman. We are not very sanguine that the anticipations of Mr Rees will be realised—indeed it seems to us an impossibility that the actual results can do otherwise than fall far short of the hopes of the promoters. But so far the developments have fully justified the attitude that we have all along assumed on this matter; that if many persons in this district cannot bring themselves to believe in the possibility of Mr Rees being able to accomplish what he has undertaken, there is no reason why there should be any active opposition to the scheme. We certainly think that Mr Rees is aiming at much higher objects than to us there appears any likelihood of his attaining; but there is the possibility that he may achieve much that may be of lasting benefit to this district, if not to the colony as a whole. We do not know of any other man that has attempted a scheme on anything like the same basis who has been able to awaken so much interest in his undertaking. What man has had his actions telegraphed all over the world as those of Mr Rees have been since he reached England ? Some of his opponents may say that the simplicity of the people who have to be dealt with has much to do with this, but however this may be, if good is the ultimate result, no one need complain. We do not think that the scheme as evolved i can be successful, but there is every reason to believe that good may result from it. It is our earnest hope that such may be the case.
