TROUBLE IN SAMOA.

AN ENGAGEMENT TAKEN PLACE. GERMAN INTRIGUE. Auckland, Saturday. Advices per Alameda state an engagement has taken place between the adherents of Tamasese and Malietoa. Over 3000 men took part, and many were killed and wounded. The Germans are accused of intriguing to bring about hostilities. FURTHER PARTICULARS. Six thousand men are in the field, more than two-thirds on Malietoa’s side. Tamaseee s party are under command of Herr Brandeis, the German Premier of Samoa The native police deserted. Theengagement which took place was a skirmish with the outposts of Malietoa’s force, about 300 being atra.'ked by 500 under Brandeis. The latter retreated with the loss of eeven killed and a large number wounded. It is stated only three were killed on the other side, with two prisoners and two wounded. Tamasese’s band cut off the heads of those killed. The English and American residents were alarmed for the neutral territory being abolished. It is feared the natives will sack the stores and dwellings of Europeans in Apia. The trouble was just commencing when the mail steamer left. On the m -rning of the 4th August some Germans in a boat from a man-of-war boarded a vessel belonging to McArthur and Co., insulted those in charge, and made a search of the vessel. The United States Consul has sent a cable despatch to Washington.
