NO SHOW.

Anything concerning the agricultural or pastoral interest is entitled to our attention. The annual meeting of the Agricultural and Pastoral Society took place last Saturday afternoon, and certainly those who were present may be credited with being practical. In less than ten minutes the whole of the business had been concluded, the main decision being that there was to be no show. For many reasons this is to be regretted, but the old argument “ hard times ” had to be contended with, and unfortunately its weight is such that it can be made effective without much talk. All things being considered, the best course was undoubtedly

taken, but we must confess that the prompt way in which the President brought about this result was to our mind hardly the correct thing. It was utterly wrong in principle, though no doubt the result was so certain that it really mattered little. One would have thought the officers would have been first elected, even supposing, as was done, that there was an allround re-election. The newly-elected officers might have seen their way to do something, and in any case there could have been no harm done. However, all the members present appeared to be completely hopeless as to the possibility of a show being a success this year, and looking at it from an outsider’s point of view the reasons for that hopelessness seemed only too well grounded.
