BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The above Council met on Tuesday evening last. Present: The Mayor, and Cre Lucas, Joyce, Whinray, Lewis, Coleman, Townley, and Harding. INCOMING CORRESPONDENCE. From the Loan and Mercantile Agency Co., asking the Council to contribute a third of the cost of asphalting the footpath in front of their premises, and also that the kerbing should be attended to. Cr Townley thought the kerbing could be turned and thus save the cost of new material. Decided to ask for an estimate of cost. Cr Lucas suggested that the Clerk should interview the owners of the adjoining properties, and ask them to co-operate with the Council in asphalting the footpath as far as Adair's store. Cr Lewis would like to know where the money was to eome from, as the estimates had now been prepared. It was agreed to make the enquiry. From the Audit Department, enclosing account for £6 for costs incurred in auditing the Council's books. Agreed to. ovebseeb’s bepobi. Stone contract.—The stone contract for Read’s Quay is being pushed on—about 10 chains have been metalled. I have got six trucks of gravel for repairs to the Haiti Boad. Five or six men have been employed in preparing Read’s Quay and Childers Road to receive the metal. About 40 yards of stone will be put on Gladstone Road as soon as convenient. Carting for the month, £8 7s 6d; day labor, £l4 14s. P.W. COMMITTEE. The Public Works Committee reported that Mr Knox’s tender for carting stone for Read’s Quay, at 7d per yard, had been accepted. Cr Coleman was appointed a member of the above Committee.

PAYMENTS. The following accounts were passed for pay-

£57 15 0 WATERING THE STREETS. Cr Whinray brought forward the subject of watering the streets. He considered the Council should try and obtain fresh water for that purpoee, as it would be far more preferable. Cr Lewis would like to see the Council rent a gas engine, and supply the water themselves. Cr Lucas concurred with the last speaker. There had been considerable complaints about the way in which the contract had been carried out last year. Cr Townley thought the best plan would be to rent a gas engine and also provide themselves with a horse, as it would come far cheaper in the end. The cost by gas and engine would only be about 2d a load. Cr Whinray said it would be better to hire a horse. Cr Townley said there was ample work for a horse—they had only to look at their accounts for carting. He would move that the Public Works Committee be authorised to hire a gas engine, and also to provide the necessary appliances for pumping water at the engine shed, for the purpose of watering the streets. Cr Whinray seconded the motion, which was carried. LICENSE FEES. Cr Joyce said he had been requested to ask the Council why a man named Kane had been charged a license fee of £1 for carting a load of furniture to the Whataupoko. Cr Townley thought an error had occurred, and therefore the money should be returned. The Clerk said the matter had been reported to him that Kane was removing furniture in the Borough without a license. The fee came under By-law No. 4. Cr Joyce thought that, under these circumstances, all carts that came in for a load were equally liable, as Kane did not ply for hire in the Borough. He would move that the money be refunded. Cr Townley seconded. Cr Lucas said the Council could call upon all country carts to pay a license fee under the Municipal Corporations Aot. The motion was put and carried. The Clerk stated that none of the Livery Stables had taken out licenses for their traps. He supposed the Council would have to summons them. Cr Townley considered that one summons would be sufficient, as they could make a test case of it, A ballot was then taken, when Mr Stevenson's name was drawn, and the Clerk was instructed to take proceedings forthwith.
