Mr Stead has this season up to the present time had the worst of luck with his brood mares as first of all Marion slipped twins to Nordenfe'dt, and now Iris has lost her splendid foal to Martini-Henry. The loss of the latter appears almost inexplicable as the youngster was viewed in the best of health and spirits, gambolling in the paddock only au hour or two before his premature decease. From the latest Australian files Carlyon is likely to be a pronounced favourite for the Melbourne Cup, and he was quoted at 100 to 7, which price was on offer about Malua. For the Derby 6 to 4 was offered about Volley, and 7 to 4 reported taken. This is a ridiculous price to accept about the filly for a race in the spring. The last horse parade at Carterton, was the best show held there for years past. The thoroughbreds shown were :—Treason, Premier, Administrator, Grand Duke, Voltigeur, Prairie Bird, Tim Whiffbr, and Fitz Hercules, In draughts the following paraded :—Piscatorius, Prince Albert, Avon, Rapid Roan, Hero, Stanley, Sir Colin Campbell, Nugget, and Loch Dhu.
