COUNTY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the above Counci was held yesterday afternoon, Messrs Clark (Chairman), Stubbs, Wethered, Orr, Murphy, Gray, King, Tuohy, and Coleman being present. The Hospital and Charitable Aid Board applied for £33 6s Bd, in addition to the sum already voted by the Council, as there had been several demands received from Auckland lately, and their funds were now short. Cr Coleman had attended the moeting of the Board that day, and he thought it was necessary for the Council to pass the amount, as there was a great amount of distress in the Bay and demands had been received from Auckland for fees for the treatment of Gisborne patients at that place. The request was complied with. Mt McPhail, on behalf of the settlers of Waimata, wrote calling attention to the state of the fords in that district.—The Engineer thought that if about £25 was expended it would remedy the defects complained of.— The Engineer was authorised to bring up report at next meeting. The Property Tax Department wrote drawing attention to clause 7 of the “ Crown and Native Land Rating Act Repeal Act, 1888,” and stating that it was necessary the above section should be complied with before any moneys could be paid by Government in respect of rates on native lands.—The Clerk had already atteifted to the matter. The Audit Inspector wrote stating that he was not as yet satisfied as to the dog tax returns, and asking for a full statement to be forwarded.—Letter received. Mr Shaw wrote, objecting to pay £lO 2a 6d for some land in the Whangaroa Block as the land was his own and valueless.—Received. The Marine Department forwarded a copy of the Fisheries Bill, which was introduced into Parliament during the recent season, and invited the Council to make any suggestions they wished, as it was proposed to introduce a similar Bill next session.—Received. The Survey Department forwarded a statement of accrued thirds due to.to the Council from the Hangaroa district, and asking that a proposal for the expenditure of the money be furnished. —The Clerk said he had attended to the matter. The Engineer said with reference to the work at Rangitira it was delayed owing to the want of piles which had now been received, and the works were going on satisfactorily. The cost would be about £23. The Clerk reported that he had sent notices to the slaughterhouse keepers informing them that they would have to send in their returns more regularly.—The Clerk was instructed to see that all slaughterhouse licenses were paid when due. Hamblett, £1 16s; Charitable Aid Hoard, £33 6s 8d; Patutahi Road Board, £2 7s. The Council went into Committee to consider a proposal to borrow £12,000 under the "Loans to Local Bodies Act,” and it was decided to bring the matter forward at next meeting.

Cr King proposed that the roads should be maintained in sections by contract.—Cr Tuohy seconded, as he considered it would be a great saving. —Cr Murphy thought the Tologa riding should* be omitted from the schedule, —Cr Stubbs said each riding should go on its own merits.—The Chairman was in favor of Cr King's motion.—Cr King would leave out the Coast roads if it suited the Council. —Cr Stubbs thought the Council should spend the money on each riding. He moved as an amendment that only the main roads ba let by contract.—Cr Wethered seconded.—The amendment was carried. Cr Murphy gave notice of motion that the salaries of the Clerk and Engineer be reduced to £250 and £2OO respectively. Cr King suggested that 15 per cent, should be taken from each riding to meet the office expenses. It was decided that the scale of tolls at the Tologa Ferry be the same as the last year, and that tenders be called for the right to collect the same.—The Engineer was instructed to report as to the best means of using the punt as a footbridge.
